What is Tempeh? (with recipe!)

What is tempeh?

Tempeh is a plant-based, vegan meat-alternative made from fermented soy beans. Is it NOT the same as tofu, in fact it has a completely different texture and taste! It is much more firm than tofu, and has a savoury, nutty flavour. Tempeh is also less processed than tofu, as it still contains whole soybeans (which are formed into a patty). So if you’re not a fan of tofu, definitely give tempeh a try! It’s high in protein and calcium, and serves as a great meat alternative.

How do you eat tempeh?

This is our favourite recipe, although there are many different ways to enjoy tempeh! Use tempeh as a substitute for meat or tofu, such as in burgers, stir fries, salads, chilis, and more!

Ingredients:

1 package tempeh (~225 g)

2 tbsp sesame oil

2 tbsp natural peanut butter

2 tbsp soy sauce

2 tbsp lime juice

¼ - ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Cooking oil

Directions:

  1. Boil ~1 inch of water in a pan. Add tempeh from package, and steam for 10 minutes on medium heat. Then rinse tempeh and cut into small pieces (small triangles look nice!)

  2. Whisk together sesame oil, peanut butter, soy sauce, lime juice, and red pepper flakes

  3. Coat the tempeh pieces in the marinade, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (more time = more flavour!)

  4. When you are ready to bake the tempeh, preheat oven to 375 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and add marinated tempeh. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven, and drizzle any remaining marinade on top. Add to your favourite salad, rice, or noodle dish! Leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 2-3 days.

  5. If you want crispy tempeh: After baking, heat 1 tbsp oil in frying pan. Fry all sides of tempeh, until crispy and golden brown. Enjoy immediately.
