Spirulina Smoothie Bowl

Smoothie bowls make such a refreshing breakfast or snack in these hot summer months! Here's a smoothie bowl recipe that uses a bit of an unusual ingredient... spirulina!

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae (don't worry, it's non-toxic!) that many vegans use as a source of protein and vitamin B12. However, studies suggest that spirulina is a subpar source of vitamin B12 as it is not in a well-absorbed form... so if you are strictly vegan, we still recommend supplementing vitamin B12! Spirulina boasts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as may improve lipid and glucose metabolism that helps to reduce liver fat and protect the heart. Plus spirulina adds a fun blue-green colour to whatever food you add it to!
